I eat, therefore….
In London exactly four hundred years ago this month, metaphysical poet John Donne lay near death in a typhus-ridden haze and scrawled the immortal line, “No man is an island.”
Meanwhile over in Amsterdam, in an epic wrestling match with logic, philosopher Rene Descartes submitted that being an island was about the only thing a person could be sure of.
Donne’s reciprocity smelled of old Paganism, Descartes’ detached Modernism seemed so now.
Europe steamed off with Rene into the Enlightenment and sadly the Earth has been paying for it ever since.
I sometimes wonder if Rene Descartes was a green grocer whether he might have come to more interdependent conclusions.
These could be some of his findings;
- We exist only through the skills of our farmers who grow our food and care for the land.
- We exist out of the talents of our bakers, cheesemakers, beekeepers, toilet paper manufacturers, canners, preservers and wholesalers.
- We exist through the ingenuity of our packers, drivers, buyers, customer service team, marketers and website coders.
- We exist by the goodwill of our customers and their trust we will source ethical & delicious food in a comprehensive range of reusable and recyclable packaging.
- And we exist because the Earth gives us all we need to live and do our work.
Just as Einstein theorised that people, islands, everything only exist through their relationships with each other, maybe Descartes would also conclude that no person or grocery provider is an island.
