Summary

If you need a good excuse for a little self-care, then delay no more. It’s spring, the birds are building their nests and the windows in the house could do with a scrub. And lets face it, so could we. So mix up your own remedy using spent (or fresh) coffee grounds, and keep it by the shower for a simple homemade skin treatment that feels and smells so good.

You can re-use spent (but still fresh) coffee grounds for this. Although the antioxidants might be drained, they’re still be a great exfoliant and you’re utilising a waste product so you get extra points.

Homemade Body Scrub

Mix together the ground coffee and sugar. Warm the coconut oil so it softens a little, by running the jar under hot water or placing in a shallow pot of boiling water. Add the coffee and sugar and mix together well. Apply a small amount to wet skin with a gentle circular motion. Rinse well.

Alternatively, replace the coffee grounds with a mineral-rich salt, though it may be a bit harsh on sensitive skin so use with care. A wonderfully nourishing option for sensitive skin is to grind a cup of rolled oats, mix with a little honey and the coconut oil. Soft, sweet and oh so moisturised. The kitchen provides!

  1. If you want something a little more foamy in nature dry beans from adzuki to white beans can produce a really good scrub. Grind the beans in a coffee grinder and add the warmed oil – add the salt as well if you want .. it’s super clean scrub which leaves the skin soft to touch. It’s from a Japanese recipe that uses adzuki beans, and you can also use mung beans.
